Perch privacy

This privacy notice explains how Poach Apps Ltd, trading as Hatch Dept, handles information when you use Perch. Perch has no account or sign-up. Most of the information it uses is processed and stored on your device. It also collects limited usage and diagnostic information to operate and improve the app.

Information processed on your device

Perch uses your microphone to identify bird calls. Audio is analysed on your device and discarded as it is processed. Perch does not make or upload audio recordings.

Your bird history, walks, saved places, photographs and settings are stored on your device. You can remove this information using “Erase your record” in Settings, or by deleting the app.

Permissions and optional features

Perch asks for access to a device feature only when it is needed:

• Microphone: to listen for and identify bird calls, including during a background listening session
• Location: if you choose to record where birds were heard or track a bird walk
• Camera: if you choose to take a photograph in Perch
• Notifications: if you choose to receive local bird alerts

If you use location features, Perch may use Apple Maps and Apple’s geocoding service to display maps and turn coordinates into place names. Apple processes those requests under Apple’s privacy policy.

Usage and diagnostic information

Perch uses PostHog, hosted in the EU, for analytics and diagnostics. The information sent may include app activity and feature results, how you interact with Perch, app and device information, and crash or performance information.

We use this information to understand how Perch is used, maintain and troubleshoot it, and improve its features. Analytics are associated with a random identifier rather than an account or contact details. Perch does not use analytics for advertising or to track you across other apps and websites, and we do not sell your information.

Other services

Bird reference recordings are streamed from Wikimedia Commons when you choose to play one. Links to services such as Wikipedia, eBird and xeno-canto open in your browser. Those services receive ordinary web request information, such as your IP address, and handle it under their own privacy policies.

Perch also contacts Expo’s update service to check for app updates. Like any network service, Expo receives ordinary technical request information needed to respond.

Children

Perch is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this notice as Perch changes. The latest version will be published at this URL with a revised date.
